drinking my cup of nostalgia

Missing the cool, Missouri mornings that whisper “good morning” through the trees. Missing the beauty of walking in that cold air, feeling it hit my skin, waking me up. Missing everything that came and went; grew and dissipated with the wind. Time came and time went, like the fog at dawn, lingering for only a moment and then was gone. If only we could go back, now we’re only left with the memories; frozen inside the photographs.

Seconds, minutes, hours, days, sealed shut between pages of black and white, woven with color. The laughter, the music, all lost in space and time, held together by scenes only our minds can play back. If you close your eyes, you can see it, hear it, breathe it, feel it, all over again. Open your eyes and it vanishes, all that’s left is that blazing desire for what was to replace what is.

Remember those nights? The nights that seemed to go on forever, yet were fleeting by, along with Autumn’s gentle wind passing through the trees. The days we went dancing through the dark, looking at the stars. Remember the mornings that echoed with the sounds of people singing, not even caring if they were sharp or flat? No one cared; all they wanted was that joy that floated through that same air and into the souls of those around them. We all felt it, craved it.

It’s so easy to take for granted the Moments. You know, the ones where you forget to take those minutes in because you’re too busy snapping photos on your phone so that you can post it on Facebook or Instagram. You know, the seconds that fly by so quickly that you didn’t see that Once In A Lifetime Priceless Image that flashed right before your eyes just because someone sent you a text message. Or perhaps you missed a moment that would have made a great photograph because you were busy with something less important.

Sometimes we just have to let the Moments play in slow motion with us watching them happen without any distraction. Let them record into the workings of your memory so you can play them back later. You may not remember everything, but the feelings that came with that moment will stay with you. It’s been painted into your soul.

“we made these memories for ourselves.

where our eyes are never closing, hearts are never broken,

time’s forever frozen still…”

Hear it? Feel it? Close your eyes, what do you see? Maybe the memories are fuzzy, but they are there. Do you remember the first time you laid eyes on her? Do you remember the last time you felt his touch? Only yesterday they were right there beside you, now gone, sketched into photographs. Now the air is cold, with a tint of nostalgia floating through the air. No matter how much we want the time back, they are sealed shut behind a door that we will never be able to enter ever again. But we’ll remember.

Missing that time, holding onto the souvenirs I gathered when I was there.
